چکیده

The multiphonon energy exchange between a neutral He atom and a stepped Ni~977! surface has been measured in order to examine how the presence of a regular array of atomic-scale steps on a surface modifies energy exchange in the classical multiphonon scattering regime. At elevated substrate temperatures, we compare the multiphonon scattering with the predictions of a classical theory that has previously been used by others for assessing energy exchange involving a smooth surface. There is a significant discrepancy between the theoretical predictions and our experimental data, which we attribute to differences between a smooth and stepped surface. Specifically, changes in the vibrational modes and associated surface density of states due to the presence of extended surface defects have a fundamental impact on the details of the energy exchange mechanism. © 1998 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-9606~98!70640-3#

Polymer surface and thin film vibrational dynamics of poly(methyl methacrylate), polybutadiene, and polystyrene.

Inelastic helium atom scattering has been used to investigate the vibrational dynamics at the polymer vacuum interface of poly(methyl methacrylate), polystyrene, and polybutadiene thin films on SiO(x)Si(100). Experiments were performed for a large range of surface temperatures below and above the glass transition of these three polymers. The broad multiphonon feature that arises in the inelasti...

Zone edge focused two - phonon processes in He atom scattering from a simple prototype system : Xe ( 111 )

We present a theoretical analysis of the multiphonon features appearing in the angular and energy resolved scattering spectra of low energy He atoms inelastically scattered from surface phonons. By applying the recently developed fully quantum multiphonon scattering formalism to the benchmark system Xe(111) we are able to reproduce with great accuracy the experimental data and also demonstrate ...

Feasibility of measuring surface electron spin dynamics by inelastic scattering of metastable helium atoms

The application of inelastic scattering of monoenergetic beams of metastable 2S helium atoms (He*) from surfaces of magnetic insulators to study the dynamical properties of surface electron-spin systems is considered. The study is based on a calculation of the differential inelastic reflection coefficient for magnetic scattering using a distorted-wave Born approximation approach. The NiO~001! s...

UCNproduction bymultiphonon processes in superfluid Helium under pressure

Cold neutrons are converted to ultra-cold neutrons (UCN) by the excitation of a single phonon or multiphonons in superfluid helium. The dynamic scattering function S(q, ω) of the superfluid helium strongly depends on pressure, leading to a pressuredependent differential UCN production rate. A phenomenological expression for the multiphonon part of the scattering function s(λ) describing UCN pro...

Kinematical rainbow and elastic focusing effects in atom-surface scattering

In this work two general anomalous singularity effects in elastic surface diffraction are reported. First, a kinematical rainbow ~KR! condition, a special case of the well-known rainbow singularity, is examined and shown to be a two-dimensional counterpart of the glory effect in gas-phase scattering. Second, an elastic focusing ~EF! effect is presented as the elastic counterpart of a general ef...
